Assessment

KidSense speech therapist AdelaideThe first step in the process is to meet with a clinician to discuss your concerns and provide guidance on the most suitable assessments for your child. We encourage parents to bring their children to the session as it can be helpful for them to see that they are not alone in their difficulties. Parents are welcome to stay in the child-friendly waiting room until invited by their therapist to join in, usually towards the end of the session.

Our assessment process is designed to gather information about your child and include observation of their behaviour in play-based social sessions with a speech pathologist. This helps us determine whether your child may have a speech and language disorder (or other developmental concerns). Following the assessment, you will receive feedback during the evaluation and a written report (at an additional cost) within five working days. We can also organise a phone/Zoom appointment with your child’s kindy/school teacher to provide them with the assessment findings, if appropriate. To ensure we provide the best possible support, we use evidence-based practices and collaborate closely with other professionals involved in your child’s care. If you think your child may need speech therapy or have any further questions, please contact us today to arrange an assessment. We look forward to helping your family reach their goals. Thank you!

Parent Training

The best way to support your child’s communication development is to talk to and interact with them daily. You can do this in many ways, such as chatting with them, reading books together, singing, playing games, and using simple commands. It is also essential to be mindful of how you are speaking to model appropriate speech and language. It is helpful to talk one step or level above your child – for example, if they are a single-word user, try modelling longer phrases.
